From Brothel to Bridehood introduces us to a cast of young women who have escaped an existence of forced prostitution in Bombay’s infamous red-light district. Most of the girls originate in Nepal and have been trafficked into the sex trade, some even by their own relatives. The film is about the inspiring work of the Rescue Foundation (Himalaya Festival’s charity partner), which saves women from the brothels and helps them return to a “normal” life. The journey to respectability is seldom easy, as most girls are unable to go back to their homes in Nepal, and many decide to stay and make a new life in Bombay. Part of the Foundation’s work is to arrange marriages – a task fraught with all the usual trials and tribulations of an Indian wedding!
